About the Subaru Sumo

The Subaru Sumo, known as the Libero in Europe and the Domingo in Japan, is a 'kei car' based microvan stretched to accommodate a larger 1.2-litre engine. Its most distinctive feature is the selectable four-wheel-drive system, activated by a button on the gear lever, which provides surprising off-road capability for its size. Despite its narrow track and high centre of gravity, it gained a cult following for its incredible space efficiency, often featuring rotating seats and a sunroof. In the UK, it was a rare alternative to traditional small vans, prized for its ability to navigate tight lanes and slippery conditions.
