About the Mitsubishi eK
Launched in October 2001, the first-generation Mitsubishi eK (standing for 'excellent Keijidōsha') was developed to be the quintessential 'good' minicar. It utilised a semi-tall wagon body style specifically designed to fit within Japan's 1,550mm tower parking height limits while maximising interior space. Powered by the reliable 3G83 three-cylinder engine, it prioritised utility and ease of use over performance, featuring a simple, boxy aesthetic that won the Good Design Award in 2001. Its success was immediate, selling 20,000 units in its first month and eventually spawning a badge-engineered twin, the Nissan Otti.

Mitsubishi eK fun facts
- The name 'eK' is a pun on the Japanese phrase 'ii kei', which literally translates to 'good kei car'.
- Its 1,550mm height was precisely chosen to be the maximum height allowed in Japan's automated multi-storey tower parking systems.
- Despite its humble specs, it was so successful that it became Mitsubishi's highest-volume model in the Japanese domestic market during its production run.
