About the Mazda Verisa

Launched in 2004 exclusively for the Japanese market, the Mazda Verisa was designed as a 'premium compact' to bridge the gap between the Demio and the Axela. It sits on the DY platform shared with the contemporary Ford Fusion and Mazda2, but features a more sophisticated, retro-inspired exterior and a higher-quality interior with available leather upholstery. The driving experience is prioritised through improved sound insulation and a refined 1.5-litre MZR engine, though it was only ever offered with a four-speed automatic transmission. While never officially sold in the UK or US, it has become a popular 'grey import' in various markets due to its reliability and unique boutique aesthetic.

Mazda Verisa fun facts

  • The name 'Verisa' is a portmanteau of the Italian word 'verità' (truth) and the English word 'satisfaction'.
  • It won the 'Best Value' award at the 2004-2005 Japan Car of the Year awards.
  • An innovative 'e-4WD' system was available, which used an electric motor to power the rear wheels when the front wheels lost traction, saving weight over a mechanical system.
