About the Mazda RX-7 SA22C
The SA22C (often referred to as the FB) launched in 1978 as a lightweight, aerodynamic successor to the Savanna RX-3. It featured a front-mid-mounted 12A rotary engine, providing a near 50/50 weight distribution and a low centre of gravity that defined its sharp handling characteristics. While modest in power by modern standards, the 12A's smooth, high-revving nature and the car's sub-1,100kg kerb weight made it a formidable competitor in IMSA racing. Today, early 'Series 1' examples are highly prized by collectors for their clean styling and original 'sunburst' wheel designs.

Mazda RX-7 SA22C fun facts
- The RX-7's engine was so compact it sat entirely behind the front axle, leading Mazda to market the layout as 'front mid-engined'.
- The 12A engine uses two 573cc rotors, but for tax and racing purposes, its displacement was often calculated differently depending on the region.
- The SA22C featured a unique 'glass house' rear hatch design which was exceptionally aerodynamic for the late 1970s, contributing to a drag coefficient of 0.36.
