About the Mazda 800

The Mazda 800, known domestically as the first-generation Familia, marked Mazda's transition from a manufacturer of microcars and three-wheelers to a serious passenger car brand. Designed by a young Giorgetto Giugiaro at Bertone, its crisp lines were remarkably modern for the early 1960s. The 782cc all-aluminium engine was advanced for its class, featuring a cross-flow cylinder head. While modest in performance, it established Mazda's reputation for engineering quality and paved the way for the brand's global expansion.
