About the Lada Samara
The Lada Samara, or VAZ-2108, represented a radical departure for AvtoVAZ, moving away from the ageing Fiat-based rear-wheel-drive platforms to a modern front-wheel-drive layout. Developed with technical assistance from Porsche, particularly in the cylinder head design and suspension tuning, it was intended to compete with Western hatchbacks like the Volkswagen Golf. While build quality was often inconsistent, the Samara gained a reputation for extreme mechanical robustness and ease of repair in harsh climates. Today, it is a cult classic, valued for its simple, boxy 1980s aesthetic and its historical significance as the first mass-produced Soviet front-wheel-drive car.
