About the Hyundai Lantra J1

Launched in October 1990, the J1-generation Lantra (marketed as the Elantra in North America and Korea) was a pivotal model for Hyundai, moving away from licensed Mitsubishi platforms toward its own designs. While it still utilised a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6-litre DOHC engine, the chassis and body were developed in-house to compete with established rivals like the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier. It offered a high level of standard equipment for its price point, helping to establish Hyundai's reputation for value. Though early models were criticised for build quality, the Lantra proved robust and served as the foundation for Hyundai's rapid global expansion in the 1990s.
