About the Honda Insight ZE2
The second-generation Honda Insight (ZE2) was designed to democratise hybrid technology, launching as the most affordable hybrid on the market. Its distinctive 'teardrop' profile was heavily influenced by the FCX Clarity fuel-cell car to achieve a low drag coefficient of 0.28. Unlike the complex full-hybrid system of its Toyota rival, the Insight uses a 'mild' Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) setup where the electric motor provides a boost to the 1.3-litre petrol engine rather than driving the car independently for long periods. While it lacks the ultimate efficiency of the Prius, it offers a more conventional driving feel and a practical five-door layout that corrected the niche limitations of the original two-seat Insight.
