About the Ginetta G15

Launched at the 1967 Earls Court Motor Show, the Ginetta G15 is a diminutive rear-engined sports car that utilised the all-alloy powertrain from the Hillman Imp. Its lightweight glass-fibre body is bonded to a tubular steel chassis, resulting in a kerb weight of barely half a tonne and exceptional handling characteristics. While the 875cc engine seems modest, the car's power-to-weight ratio allowed it to compete with much larger contemporary sports cars. It remains a highly sought-after classic for its purity of design and involvement, representing the peak of Ginetta's road car production during the 1970s.

Ginetta G15 fun facts

  • The G15 was so light that it did not require power steering or servo-assisted brakes, offering incredibly direct feedback to the driver.
  • Because it used the Hillman Imp's rear-engine layout, the G15 featured a front-mounted fuel tank to help balance the weight distribution.
  • The car was available both as a factory-built unit and in component form to avoid the UK's Purchase Tax of the era.
