About the Ford Pilot

The Ford Pilot, also known as the V8 Pilot, was Ford UK's flagship model following World War II. It was essentially a modernized version of the pre-war Model 62, utilizing a separate chassis and a 3.6-litre 'Flathead' V8 engine that provided effortless torque but high fuel consumption. While its transverse leaf spring suspension and mechanical/hydraulic hybrid brakes were considered old-fashioned even at launch, the Pilot was prized for its robust build and performance, famously serving as a preferred vehicle for British police forces. Production ended in 1951 when it was replaced by the more modern, unibody Zephyr and Consul models.

Ford Pilot fun facts

  • The Pilot featured a built-in hydraulic jacking system as an option, allowing the driver to lift the car for wheel changes at the press of a button.
  • Early production models briefly used a smaller 2.5-litre V8, but this was quickly replaced by the 3.6-litre unit to better handle the car's substantial weight.
  • The car's vacuum-driven windscreen wipers were notorious for slowing down or stopping entirely when the engine was under heavy load or at full throttle.
