About the Ford EXP

Introduced in April 1981 as a 1982 model, the Ford EXP was the brand's first two-seater since the 1957 Thunderbird. Based on the front-wheel-drive Escort platform, it featured a lower roofline and a distinct 'frog-eyed' front fascia that remains its most recognizable trait. While marketed as a sporty personal coupe, the initial 1.6-litre CVH engine prioritised fuel economy over performance, resulting in leisurely acceleration. Despite an ambitious sales target, the EXP struggled to compete with more agile rivals like the Honda CRX and Pontiac Fiero, leading to a significant redesign in 1986.

Ford EXP fun facts

  • The EXP was actually heavier than the five-passenger Escort it was based on due to its higher level of standard equipment and sound deadening.
  • Early models featured a unique 'split-torque' automatic transmission that transmitted 93% of torque mechanically in third gear to improve efficiency.
  • The name 'EXP' was originally an internal shorthand for 'Experimental', which Ford decided to keep for the production vehicle's branding.
