About the Fiat Strada

The 105 TC was the first true sporting variant of the Fiat Strada (known as the Ritmo in Europe), designed to compete with the Volkswagen Golf GTI. It featured a 1.6-litre twin-cam engine derived from the Fiat 131, providing a rev-happy character that distinguished it from its more utilitarian siblings. While the Strada was famously marketed as being 'handbuilt by robots', the 105 TC offered a more visceral, analogue driving experience with sharp steering and a close-ratio gearbox. Today, it is a rare survivor of the 1980s hot hatch era, often overshadowed by the later Abarth-badged 130 TC but prized for its purity and distinctive Bertone-influenced styling.

Fiat Strada fun facts

  • The Strada was marketed in the UK and US under that name because 'Ritmo' was thought to sound too much like a feminine hygiene product in certain markets.
  • The 105 TC featured unique exterior touches including integrated front fog lights, a lower hatchback spoiler, and black mesh air intakes.
  • Despite the 'handbuilt by robots' advertising campaign, early Stradas were notorious for rapid corrosion, making surviving 105 TC models exceptionally rare today.
