About the Fiat 130
Launched at the 1969 Geneva Motor Show, the Fiat 130 was a bold attempt to compete with the likes of Mercedes-Benz and BMW in the executive sector. It featured a sophisticated 60-degree V6 engine designed by Aurelio Lampredi, the man behind many of Ferrari's greatest powerplants, though it was often criticised for being underpowered in its initial 2.8-litre form. The saloon's styling was conservative and boxy, contrasting sharply with the later Pininfarina-designed Coupé, yet it offered a remarkably smooth ride thanks to its independent torsion bar front and coil-sprung rear suspension. Despite its technical merits, the 130 struggled with a 'cheap' brand image and high fuel consumption, leading to modest sales and a reputation today as a rare, connoisseur's choice of Italian luxury.
