About the DAF 66
The DAF 66 was the final evolution of the Dutch firm's passenger car line before its acquisition by Volvo. Designed by Giovanni Michelotti, it replaced the 55 and introduced a more sophisticated De Dion tube rear axle, significantly improving handling over its swing-axle predecessors. Its defining feature remains the Variomatic transmission, a belt-driven CVT that allows for seamless acceleration and the unique ability to drive as fast in reverse as in forward gear. While the 1.1-litre Renault-sourced engine provided modest performance, the 66 is remembered as a pioneering example of automatic transmission technology in a compact family car.
