About the Chrysler Sunbeam
Launched at the 1978 British International Motor Show, the Sunbeam Ti was Chrysler UK's attempt to inject sporting appeal into its supermini range. It utilised the 1.6-litre iron-block engine from the Hillman Avenger Tiger, equipped with twin Weber 40 DCOE carburetors to produce a healthy 100 bhp. Unlike its front-wheel-drive rivals like the Ford Fiesta or Volkswagen Golf, the Sunbeam retained a rear-wheel-drive layout, making it a favorite for club-level rallying. While often overshadowed by the later Lotus-powered variant, the Ti remains a significant and increasingly rare piece of British motoring history from the Linwood factory.

Chrysler Sunbeam fun facts
- The Sunbeam Ti was essentially a re-clothed Hillman Avenger Tiger, sharing its engine and rear-wheel-drive mechanicals.
- Production of the Ti was relatively short-lived, as Chrysler Europe was sold to PSA Peugeot Citroën just as the car went on sale, leading to its rebranding as a Talbot.
- The car's distinctive rear hatch was made of a single piece of glass, a design choice that increased structural rigidity but resulted in a high loading sill.
