About the Chrysler Airflow

The Chrysler Airflow was a revolutionary leap in automotive design, being the first mass-produced American car developed using a wind tunnel. Its 'bridge and truss' construction served as a precursor to modern unibody architecture, offering exceptional rigidity and safety for the era. By moving the engine forward over the front axle and seating passengers between the wheels, Chrysler achieved a near 50/50 weight distribution and a vastly superior ride quality. Despite its technical brilliance, the radical 'waterfall' styling and unconventional proportions alienated conservative 1930s buyers, making it a commercial failure that nearly bankrupted the company.

Chrysler Airflow rarity in CarSpot

The Chrysler Airflow is a Rare card in CarSpot, with a rarity score of 50 out of 100. Performance cars, typically worth around £50,000 to £100,000. A Rare card is worth 40 XP.

Rarity is a collectible game mechanic, not an assessment of real-world scarcity or value.

Chrysler Airflow fun facts

  • To prove the car's structural integrity, Chrysler famously filmed an Airflow being pushed off a 110-foot cliff, after which it was driven away under its own power.
  • The Airflow's aerodynamic efficiency was so advanced that engineers discovered contemporary 'two-box' cars were actually more streamlined when driven backwards.
  • Aviation pioneer Orville Wright was consulted during the wind tunnel testing phase to help refine the car's radical streamlined shape.
