About the Vauxhall Astra GTE D
Launched in early 1983, the Astra GTE Mk1 was Vauxhall's definitive answer to the Volkswagen Golf GTI. Based on the front-wheel-drive Astra D (Opel Kadett D), it featured a 1.8-litre fuel-injected 'Family Two' engine that provided a significant performance leap over the earlier SR models. It is easily identified by its aggressive colour-coded body kit, white-painted alloy wheels (on Polar White cars), and Recaro sports seats. Despite a short production run of just 18 months before the 'teardrop' Mk2 arrived, the Mk1 earned a reputation for sharp handling and punchy mid-range torque. Today, it is exceptionally rare due to low survival rates, making it one of the most sought-after Vauxhalls for collectors.
