About the Caterham 21
Launched to celebrate Caterham's 21st anniversary, the 21 was a bold attempt to offer a more practical, weather-proof alternative to the legendary Seven. It utilised a modified Seven spaceframe chassis but featured a flowing GRP body inspired by the 1950s Lotus Eleven. The 1.8 VVC variant used Rover's Variable Valve Control engine, providing a broader power band than the standard K-Series units. Despite its agility and performance, the 21 struggled commercially following the arrival of the more advanced Lotus Elise, resulting in a production run of fewer than 50 cars. Today, it is a highly sought-after rarity for collectors who appreciate its unique blend of raw Caterham dynamics and classic roadster aesthetics.

Caterham 21 fun facts
- The Caterham 21's rear light clusters were sourced from the first-generation Ford Mondeo, while the door mirrors came from the Rover 200.
- To save weight and complexity, the 21 did not have wind-up windows; instead, the glass panels had to be manually demounted and stowed in the boot.
- The car was originally unveiled at the 1994 British Motor Show with a polished aluminium body, though production cars used glass-reinforced plastic (GRP).
