About the BMW Z1
The BMW Z1 was the first product of BMW's 'Technik' think-tank, designed to showcase advanced materials and engineering. Its most famous feature is the pair of electrically powered doors that drop vertically into the high side sills, allowing for a unique open-air driving experience. Underneath the thermoplastic body panels lies a hot-dip galvanised steel chassis and a sophisticated 'Z-axle' multi-link rear suspension that would later define the E36 3 Series. While its 2.5-litre M20 engine provides modest performance, the Z1 is prized by collectors for its avant-garde design and technical purity.

BMW Z1 fun facts
- The Z1 was designed so that all its plastic body panels could be removed and replaced with a different coloured set in about 40 minutes.
- It is perfectly legal and safe to drive the Z1 with the doors in the 'down' position, thanks to the high, reinforced door sills.
- The car's flat plastic undertray and integrated rear muffler were designed to act as a diffuser, providing genuine aerodynamic downforce.
