About the BMW 2000 CS

The BMW 2000 CS (Type 120) was the flagship of the 'New Class' range, featuring a sophisticated pillarless coupé body built by Karmann in Osnabrück. It introduced the distinctive 'shark nose' front-end styling and the Hofmeister kink that would define BMW design for decades. Powered by the legendary M10 engine with twin Solex carburettors, it offered a refined grand touring experience rather than outright sports car performance. Its success paved the way for the six-cylinder E9 2800 CS and 3.0 CSL models.

BMW 2000 CS fun facts

  • The 2000 CS was the first BMW to feature the 'Hofmeister kink' on the C-pillar as a prominent, integrated design element.
  • The unusual rectangular headlights were controversial at launch and were actually replaced by quad round lights for the US market to meet federal regulations.
  • Despite its luxury positioning, the 2000 CS was significantly lighter than its successor, the E9, making it surprisingly agile for a 1960s grand tourer.
