About the Volkswagen Golf Rallye Mk2
The Golf Rallye was developed as a homologation special to allow Volkswagen to compete in Group A rallying against the Lancia Delta Integrale. It is distinguished from the standard Mk2 Golf by its boxy flared wheel arches, rectangular projector headlamps, and a unique grille. Mechanically, it features the G-Lader supercharged 8v engine and a Syncro all-wheel-drive system. While it was heavier and slightly slower than the contemporary front-wheel-drive Golf GTI G60, its rarity and distinctive '80s aesthetic have made it a highly sought-after collector item.

Volkswagen Golf Rallye Mk2 fun facts
- To comply with the 3-litre engine capacity limit (after the 1.7x turbo/supercharger multiplier), the engine displacement was reduced from 1781cc to 1763cc.
- The Rallye was roughly twice the price of a standard Golf GTI when new, contributing to its limited commercial success at the time.
- All 5,000 units were produced at Volkswagen's Brussels plant in Belgium to meet FIA homologation requirements.
