About the Austin Ambassador
The Austin Ambassador was the final development of the ADO71 'Wedge' platform, replacing the Princess in 1982. Unlike its predecessor, it featured a full-opening hatchback and revised styling, though it famously lacked a fifth gear and a tachometer across the range. For the 1983 model year, the 2.0 HL trim was upgraded to the twin-carburettor 'O-series' engine previously reserved for the HLS, providing a modest performance boost. Today, it is exceptionally rare, with fewer than 30 examples estimated to remain on UK roads, making it a cult favourite among British Leyland enthusiasts.

Austin Ambassador fun facts
- The Ambassador was never produced in left-hand drive, meaning it was almost exclusively sold in the UK and Ireland.
- A 1982 'Not the Nine O'Clock News' skit famously parodied Fiat's 'Hand built by robots' advert with the slogan 'Hand built by Roberts'.
- Despite being a large family car, no version of the Ambassador was ever factory-fitted with a rev counter.
