About the Alfa Romeo Romeo

Introduced at the 1954 Turin Motor Show, the Alfa Romeo Romeo (often called the Autotutto or 'All-purpose') was the brand's first front-wheel-drive vehicle. It utilised a de-tuned version of the 1.3-litre DOHC engine from the Giulietta, mounted between the front seats to maximise cargo space. Its versatile chassis supported numerous body styles including vans, minibuses, and ambulances. Today, it is a highly sought-after collector's item, prized for its unique Italian styling and mechanical connection to Alfa's golden era of sports cars.

Alfa Romeo Romeo fun facts

  • The Romeo was Alfa Romeo's first ever front-wheel-drive vehicle, predating the Alfasud by nearly two decades.
  • Because the engine was shared with the Giulietta, many owners later swapped in higher-performance 1300 or 1600 Veloce engines for better cruising speeds.
  • The model was succeeded by the Romeo 2 in 1957, which introduced minor updates but kept the iconic rounded aesthetic.
