About the Volkswagen Vento

The Volkswagen Vento was introduced in 1992 as the saloon counterpart to the third-generation Golf, replacing the Jetta nameplate in European markets. The 1.9 TD variant utilised the AAZ indirect-injection turbodiesel engine, a bridge between the older naturally aspirated units and the revolutionary direct-injection TDI that followed. While not a performance car, the Vento was praised for its massive 500-litre boot and robust build quality. Today, it is a rare sight on UK roads, often overshadowed by the Golf but appreciated by enthusiasts for its period-correct '90s aesthetic and mechanical simplicity.

  • Despite being a saloon, the Vento shared almost all its front-end components with the Mk3 Golf, though it featured distinct rectangular headlights to differentiate its styling.
  • The 1.9 TD engine is known for its extreme longevity, with many examples comfortably exceeding 300,000 miles if the cambelt and cooling system are maintained.
