About the Volkswagen Scirocco Mk1
Launched in 1974 to replace the Karmann Ghia, the Mk1 Scirocco was based on the Golf platform but debuted six months earlier to iron out any production issues. The GTI variant, introduced in 1976, utilised the same Bosch K-Jetronic fuel-injected engine as the Golf GTI, offering identical performance in a lower, more aerodynamic body. Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign, its 'folded paper' aesthetic defined the look of 1970s Volkswagens. It is praised by collectors for its light weight, mechanical simplicity, and more elegant proportions compared to its hatchback sibling.

Volkswagen Scirocco Mk1 fun facts
- The Scirocco was named after a Mediterranean wind, following VW's naming convention of the era which included the Passat and Jetta.
- Early models are distinguished by their twin round headlights, while later versions like the 1978 model featured wrap-around plastic bumpers and improved rust protection.
- Total Mk1 production exceeded 500,000 units, but survival rates are low due to significant corrosion issues common in 1970s steel.
