About the Volkswagen Scirocco Mk2

The second-generation Scirocco, designed in-house by Herbert Schäfer, traded the sharp Giugiaro lines of the original for a more rounded, aerodynamic profile. The GTX trim arrived in 1984 as the range-topper, effectively serving as a 'GTI in a party frock' by utilizing the 112bhp fuel-injected engine from the Golf GTI. It is distinguished by its prominent rear spoiler, which bisects the rear window, and a full body kit including flared wheel arches. While it shared its chassis with the Mk1 Golf, the Mk2 Scirocco offered a lower centre of gravity and improved high-speed stability.

Volkswagen Scirocco Mk2 fun facts

  • The GTX was the first Scirocco to feature the large 'wraparound' rear spoiler that became a signature of the model's 1980s aesthetic.
  • Despite the new body, the Mk2 Scirocco was built on the same A1 platform as the original 1974 model and the Mk1 Golf.
  • The GTX trim was eventually superseded by the 16V model, but the 8-valve GTX remained a favourite for its low-end torque and reliability.
