About the Volkswagen K70

The Volkswagen K70 represents a pivotal moment in automotive history as the brand's first water-cooled, front-engined, and front-wheel-drive model. Originally developed by NSU to sit below the rotary-powered Ro80, it was rebranded as a Volkswagen following the 1969 acquisition of NSU. Despite its advanced engineering, including all-independent suspension and inboard front disc brakes, it struggled to find an audience among air-cooled purists and faced stiff internal competition from the Audi 100 and VW's own Type 4. Today, it is a rare and historically significant collector's item, serving as the direct technological ancestor to the Passat and Golf.

Volkswagen K70 fun facts

  • The 'K' in K70 stands for 'Kolben' (German for piston), distinguishing it from NSU's 'Ro' (Rotary) models.
  • To avoid overheating the inboard front disc brakes, they were mounted next to the gearbox rather than at the wheels.
  • Only about 800 right-hand drive units were ever produced for the UK market, making them exceptionally rare today.
