About the Volkswagen Golf Country Mk2
The Volkswagen Golf Country was a limited-production variant of the Mk2 Golf, developed in collaboration with Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Austria. It featured a heavily modified chassis with a subframe that raised the ride height by 120mm, providing 210mm of ground clearance. Equipped with the Syncro four-wheel-drive system, it included rugged additions like a front bull bar, skid plates, and a rear-mounted spare wheel. While not a hardcore rock crawler, its ability to handle rough terrain made it a cult classic and a spiritual ancestor to the modern compact SUV.

Volkswagen Golf Country Mk2 fun facts
- The Golf Country was hand-finished at the Steyr-Daimler-Puch plant in Graz, where the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is also manufactured.
- Despite its rugged looks, it used the standard 98hp 1.8-litre engine, which struggled slightly with the extra 160kg of weight added by the off-road hardware.
- A ultra-rare 'Chrome Edition' was produced near the end of the run, featuring chrome bull bars, a sliding Webasto sunroof, and a more luxurious beige leather interior.
