About the Toyota Fortuner AN50
Launched in 2004 as part of Toyota's IMV project, the first-generation Fortuner was designed to provide a rugged, seven-seat SUV for emerging markets like Thailand, South Africa, and Southeast Asia. Built on the Hilux's robust ladder-frame chassis, it combined genuine off-road capability with a more family-oriented wagon body. The 3.0-litre D-4D engine (1KD-FTV) became the hallmark of the range, prized for its reliability and high torque delivery in harsh conditions. While its high centre of gravity and utilitarian roots resulted in a less refined on-road experience than car-based crossovers, its durability has made it a staple for overlanders and families in regions with challenging terrain.
