About the Subaru R1
Introduced in 2005, the Subaru R1 is a shortened, three-door version of the R2, designed to meet Japanese kei car regulations while offering a more premium, 'personal' feel. Unlike many boxy competitors, the R1 features a distinctive 'one-motion' egg-shaped silhouette styled by former Alfa Romeo designer Andreas Zapatinas. It is powered by a rare-for-its-class 658cc inline-four engine, which provides smoother operation than the typical three-cylinder units found in other microcars. Though technically a 2+2, the rear seats are extremely cramped, reinforcing its role as a stylish urban runabout for one or two people.

Subaru R1 fun facts

- Its front grille design was inspired by the spread wings of an aircraft, a nod to Subaru's parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, and its aerospace heritage.
- The R1 was available with an optional 'Premium Black Limited' edition that featured a high-quality leather and Alcantara interior.
