About the Sunbeam Imp

The Sunbeam Imp, a badge-engineered version of the Hillman Imp, was Rootes Group's ambitious response to the BMC Mini. It featured a revolutionary all-aluminium overhead-cam engine derived from a Coventry Climax fire-pump unit, canted at 45 degrees to maintain a low profile. Despite its clever packaging—including a top-hinged rear window that made it an early hatchback—early reliability issues and the remote location of its Linwood factory hampered its commercial success. Today, it is celebrated by collectors for its sharp rack-and-pinion steering and high-revving engine that offers a more sophisticated driving experience than many of its contemporary rivals.
