About the Subaru XT

Launched in 1985, the Subaru XT (known as the Alcyone in Japan) was a radical departure for a brand then known for utilitarian wagons. Its extreme wedge profile achieved a drag coefficient of just 0.29, making it one of the most aerodynamic production cars of its era. The interior was equally futuristic, featuring a digital dashboard, a 'pistol-grip' gear lever, and a two-spoke steering wheel designed to resemble an aircraft yoke. While the 1.8-litre turbocharged boxer engine provided modest performance, the car's selectable four-wheel drive and height-adjustable pneumatic suspension showcased Subaru's technical ambition.

Subaru XT fun facts

  • The XT's door handles were designed to be completely flush with the bodywork, popping out only when a small flap was pressed to maintain aerodynamic efficiency.
  • Its instrument cluster was mounted to the steering column, allowing the entire pod to tilt and telescope with the wheel so the gauges were never obscured.
  • The car featured a single, large windscreen wiper that tucked away beneath the lip of the bonnet when not in use to further reduce wind resistance.
