About the Subaru R-2
Launched in 1969 to replace the ageing Subaru 360, the R-2 was designed to meet the evolving needs of the Japanese kei car market. It retained the rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout of its predecessor but featured a significantly more spacious 'semi-monocoque' body and improved suspension. The air-cooled two-stroke engine was refined to produce 30 hp, offering better performance for highway driving which was becoming more common in Japan. Despite its technical improvements, it faced stiff competition from front-wheel-drive rivals and was eventually replaced by the water-cooled Rex in 1972.

Subaru R-2 fun facts
- The R-2 was one of the last major Subaru models to use an air-cooled two-stroke engine before the company transitioned to water-cooled four-stroke units.
- Subaru offered a 'Young SS' trim for the R-2 which featured a dual-carburettor engine producing 36 hp, a significant output for such a small displacement.
- The R-2's design was a departure from the 'Ladybug' curves of the 360, adopting a more modern, squared-off aesthetic that maximised interior room.
