About the Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit
The Silver Spirit was launched in 1980 as the successor to the Silver Shadow II, introducing a lower, wider aesthetic designed by Szabolcs de Kozotto. It retained the venerable 6.75-litre L-series V8 and the sophisticated Girling hydraulic self-levelling suspension system licensed from Citroën. While Rolls-Royce famously described the power output as 'adequate', the focus was entirely on effortless torque and peerless cabin insulation. This first generation (Mark I) is distinguished by its Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, which replaced carburettors in most markets by 1980.

Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit fun facts
- The Silver Spirit was the first Rolls-Royce to feature a retractable Spirit of Ecstasy mascot, designed to sink into the radiator shell if tampered with or in the event of a collision.
- The car's self-levelling suspension was so effective that it could maintain a perfectly level ride height even when carrying a full load of passengers and luggage.
- Despite its size, the Silver Spirit used a complex hydraulic system to power both the brakes and the suspension, operating at extremely high pressures.
