About the Porsche 904

The Porsche 904 Carrera GTS was the first Porsche to use a ladder chassis and a glass-fibre reinforced plastic body, which was bonded to the steel frame for increased rigidity. Designed by Ferdinand Alexander 'Butzi' Porsche, it was primarily a racing car but was sold to customers to meet FIA Group 3 homologation requirements. It is powered by the complex Type 587/3 four-cam engine, though some later factory examples featured six and eight-cylinder units. Its success was immediate, securing a legendary 1-2 finish at the 1964 Targa Florio and proving competitive in rallies and endurance races alike.

Rarity is a collectible game mechanic, not an assessment of real-world scarcity or value.

Porsche 904 fun facts

  • The 904 was the last Porsche developed to be driven to the track, raced, and then driven home again.
  • Because Peugeot had trademarked three-digit car names with a middle zero, Porsche marketed the car as the 'Carrera GTS' rather than the 904.
  • The body was manufactured by the Heinkel Aircraft Company to ensure the lightweight fibreglass met strict quality standards.
