About the Opel Olympia
Introduced in 1935, the Opel Olympia was a landmark in automotive engineering as Germany's first mass-produced car to feature an all-steel unitary (monocoque) body. This 1.5-litre 'OL38' version, launched in late 1937, replaced the original side-valve 1.3-litre engine with a more powerful overhead-valve unit and a four-speed gearbox. The unibody design significantly reduced weight and increased rigidity, setting a new standard for European family cars. Named in honour of the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, it remains a highly significant pre-war classic for its technical innovation and role in motorising Germany.

Opel Olympia fun facts
- The Olympia's monocoque construction allowed it to be 180 kg lighter than the traditional body-on-frame model it replaced.
- Its name was a direct marketing tie-in to the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and early models featured a discus thrower badge on the grille.
- The 1.5-litre OHV engine introduced in 1937 was so robust that its basic architecture remained in production until 1960.
