About the Oldsmobile Toronado
The third-generation Oldsmobile Toronado represented a radical downsizing for General Motors, shedding nearly 1,000 lbs compared to its predecessor while retaining its signature front-wheel-drive layout. By 1982, the model had transitioned to the reliable 307 cubic-inch 'Rocket' V8 and a new four-speed overdrive automatic transmission to meet tightening fuel economy standards. Though performance was modest, the Toronado excelled as a 'personal luxury' cruiser, offering a plush, isolated ride and a tech-forward interior for its era. It remains a significant example of the E-body platform shared with the Cadillac Eldorado and Buick Riviera.
