About the Mitsubishi Challenger
The first-generation Mitsubishi Challenger, marketed as the Shogun Sport in the UK and Pajero Sport in other regions, was developed as a more urban-focused alternative to the full-sized Pajero. Built on the robust ladder-frame chassis of the L200 (Strada) pickup, it retained genuine off-road credentials including a low-range transfer case and high ground clearance. The 2.5-litre 4D56 turbodiesel engine is a legendary unit known for its simplicity and durability, though it prioritises low-end torque over outright highway speed. While less refined than contemporary unibody SUVs, its mechanical honesty and ruggedness have made it a long-standing favourite for towing and rural utility.
