About the McLaren 12C

The MP4-12C marked McLaren's return to road car production, designed to challenge the Ferrari 458 with pure engineering logic. It features a one-piece carbon-fibre 'MonoCell' chassis weighing just 75kg and a bespoke M838T twin-turbo V8. Its ProActive Chassis Control system replaces traditional anti-roll bars with interconnected hydraulic dampers, providing a ride quality that remains remarkably supple for a supercar. While early software issues were noted, the 12C is now respected for its immense speed and technical purity.

McLaren 12C fun facts

  • The 'MP4' prefix was a nod to McLaren's Formula 1 cars, standing for 'Marlboro Project 4', though it was later dropped from the name in 2012.
  • The car uses 'Brake Steer', a technology McLaren pioneered in F1 in 1997 before it was banned, which brakes the inside rear wheel to reduce understeer.
  • The first development mule for the 12C was a Ferrari 360 Modena, used to test the McLaren-designed engine and cooling systems in secret.
