About the Lotus Elite Type 14
The Lotus Elite Type 14 is a landmark of automotive engineering, famously being the first production car to feature a fully load-bearing fiberglass monocoque. Designed by Peter Kirwan-Taylor with aerodynamics by Frank Costin, it achieved a remarkably low drag coefficient of 0.29, allowing it to reach high speeds despite its modest 1.2-litre Coventry Climax engine. While it was a giant-killer on the track, winning its class at Le Mans six times, the complex construction was expensive and fragile, nearly bankrupting Lotus. Today, it is celebrated by collectors for its purity of design and surgical handling, embodying Colin Chapman's 'add lightness' philosophy.
