About the Benz Velo

The Benz Velo, introduced in 1894, represents a pivotal moment in automotive history as the first car to be produced in significant numbers. Designed by Karl Benz as a lightweight and inexpensive alternative to the heavier Victoria, it helped transition the motor car from a bespoke luxury for the elite to a viable commercial product. Its single-cylinder engine and wooden-spoke wheels reflect the carriage-derived engineering of the era. Today, it is a cornerstone of any serious veteran car collection and remains eligible for the prestigious London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.
