About the Jaguar Sovereign X308

The X308 generation marked a pivotal moment for the XJ, replacing the AJ16 straight-six with the all-new AJ-V8 engine. The Sovereign trim was the range's luxury flagship, distinguished by its extensive use of burr walnut veneers, fluted leather seats, and additional chrome exterior detailing. While early models faced Nikasil bore-liner issues, most survivors have been rectified, leaving a refined and surprisingly capable cruiser. It represents the final evolution of the classic XJ40-based silhouette before the move to aluminium construction.

Jaguar Sovereign X308 fun facts

  • The Sovereign trim featured more elaborate wood veneers than the standard XJ8, including walnut trim on the window controls and ashtrays.
  • Early AJ-V8 engines used Nikasil cylinder linings which could fail when exposed to high-sulphur fuel; Jaguar replaced many under warranty with steel-lined blocks.
  • The X308 was the first XJ to be offered exclusively with an automatic transmission, as Jaguar determined a manual did not suit the V8's character.
