About the Cadillac Eldorado
The twelfth-generation Eldorado marked a radical departure for Cadillac, moving away from the boxy, downsized proportions of the 1980s toward a sleek, 'international' design language. While the 1992 launch model initially carried over the 4.9-litre pushrod V8, the mid-year introduction of the 32-valve Northstar V8 transformed the car into a genuine performance threat. This all-aluminium DOHC engine was one of the most sophisticated powerplants in the world at the time, featuring a 'limp-home' mode that allowed it to run without coolant for 50 miles. Despite its front-wheel-drive layout, the Eldorado offered a composed ride and surprising agility for its size, especially when equipped with the road-sensing suspension.

Cadillac Eldorado fun facts
- The Northstar engine's 'fail-safe' cooling system allowed the car to be driven at 50 mph for up to 50 miles with no coolant by alternating which bank of cylinders fired to air-cool the block.
- Though the 1992 model year began with the 4.9L engine, the Northstar V8 was introduced mid-year as a 1993 model-year option, making early 1992 cars the last of the pushrod Eldorados.
- The 1992 redesign was so successful that Eldorado sales jumped by nearly 40% compared to the previous year's aging model.
