About the Hyundai Equus LZ

Introduced in 1999, the first-generation Hyundai Equus (LZ) was a joint development with Mitsubishi Motors, sharing its platform with the Mitsubishi Proudia. Designed to compete with the SsangYong Chairman and established German luxury imports in the South Korean market, it served as the brand's ultimate flagship for a decade. The 3.5-litre Sigma V6 model offered a front-wheel-drive layout, a departure from the rear-wheel-drive norm of its European rivals, but focused heavily on rear-seat passenger comfort. While rarely seen outside of Korea, China, and the Middle East, it laid the groundwork for the later Genesis brand.

Hyundai Equus LZ fun facts

  • The name 'Equus' is Latin for 'horse', and the car featured a unique winged horse hood ornament rather than the standard Hyundai badge.
  • In European markets, the Equus was sold in very limited numbers under the name 'Hyundai Centennial'.
  • The first-generation Equus was so successful in its home market that it outlived its Mitsubishi twin, the Proudia, by eight years.
