About the Hudson Hornet
Introduced in 1951, the Hudson Hornet revolutionised American car design with its 'step-down' chassis, which placed the floorpan between the frame rails to achieve a remarkably low centre of gravity. This engineering advantage, combined with the 308 cubic-inch 'H-145' engine—the largest six-cylinder in a production car at the time—made it nearly unbeatable on the NASCAR circuit. While competitors relied on overhead-valve V8s, the Hornet's superior handling allowed it to carry more speed through corners. Its racing pedigree was immortalised for a new generation as the character 'Doc Hudson' in Pixar's Cars.

Hudson Hornet fun facts
- The Hornet's 'step-down' design allowed it to sit nearly 9 inches lower than contemporary rivals, providing a handling advantage that led to 27 NASCAR wins in 1952 alone.
- Its 5.0-litre engine was so effective that it outperformed the famous Oldsmobile 'Rocket' V8 in both torque and track performance during the early 1950s.
- The 'Twin H-Power' dual-carburettor setup, which became a legendary performance option, was initially introduced as a dealer-installed kit in mid-1951.
