About the GMC Typhoon
The GMC Typhoon was a high-performance derivative of the Jimmy, developed alongside the Syclone pickup to redefine American performance. It utilised a Mitsubishi TD06-17C turbocharger and a Garrett water-to-air intercooler to produce 280 hp, distributed via a BorgWarner transfer case with a 35/65 rear-bias split. While its handling was improved by self-levelling air suspension, its primary focus was straight-line speed, famously beating a Ferrari 348 in contemporary Car and Driver testing. Today, it is a cult classic, prized for its '90s aesthetic and status as the progenitor of the modern performance SUV.

GMC Typhoon fun facts
- The Typhoon's 0-60 mph time of 5.3 seconds made it faster than the contemporary Ferrari 348 ts in a quarter-mile drag race.
- Production was limited to just two model years, with 2,497 units built in 1992 and 2,200 units in 1993.
- Despite its SUV body, GMC strictly advised against off-roading or towing, as the lowered suspension and drivetrain were not designed for utility.
