About the Fiat X1/9
Designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone, the Fiat X1/9 was a revolutionary small sports car that democratised the mid-engine layout previously reserved for exotics like the Lamborghini Miura. The 1500 model, introduced in 1978, addressed the original car's lack of power with a larger engine and a much-needed five-speed gearbox. Its wedge-shaped profile and pop-up headlights defined 1970s futurism, while the removable targa top offered open-air driving without sacrificing structural rigidity. Despite modest straight-line speed, its near-perfect weight distribution and sharp rack-and-pinion steering make it a benchmark for affordable handling.

Fiat X1/9 fun facts
- The X1/9 was the first Fiat designed from the ground up to meet stringent US crash safety regulations, resulting in a remarkably stiff chassis for its size.
- The model name was an internal Fiat code for the ninth experimental passenger vehicle project, which unusually survived into production instead of receiving a traditional name.
- The spare wheel and fuel tank are located between the seats and the engine to centralise mass, leaving room for two separate luggage compartments at the front and rear.
