About the Fiat Barchetta
Launched in 1995 to rival the Mazda MX-5, the Fiat Barchetta (Italian for 'little boat') was a stylish front-wheel-drive roadster based on a shortened Punto chassis. Designed by Andreas Zapatinas, its curvaceous bodywork was originally hand-assembled by Maggiora in Chivasso until the coachbuilder's bankruptcy in 2002. The 1.8-litre engine features variable valve timing, a first for Fiat, providing a rev-happy character that complements its agile handling. Despite being front-wheel drive, it is widely praised for its communicative steering and playful chassis, though it was famously only ever produced in left-hand drive.

Fiat Barchetta fun facts
- The Barchetta was only ever manufactured in left-hand drive, even for the UK and Japanese markets where it was officially sold.
- Production was halted for over a year in 2002 when the coachbuilder Maggiora went bankrupt, eventually resuming at Fiat's own Mirafiori plant.
- The car's distinctive flush-fitting door handles were inspired by the 1940s Cisitalia 202.
