About the Daimler Sovereign Series I

Launched in October 1969, the Series I Daimler Sovereign was the more exclusive, badge-engineered sibling of the revolutionary Jaguar XJ6. While mechanically identical to the Jaguar, the Daimler was distinguished by its iconic fluted radiator grille and rear number plate housing, alongside a more sumptuously appointed interior featuring unique seat pleating and higher-grade materials. It utilised the legendary 4.2-litre XK engine, providing effortless torque and a level of refinement that famously rivalled Rolls-Royce at a fraction of the cost. As the first Daimler to adopt the XJ platform, it represents the pinnacle of British luxury saloon design from the late 1960s, offering a 'magic carpet' ride that remains impressive by modern standards.

  • The 4.2-litre XK engine in the Sovereign featured twin SU carburettors, producing a claimed 245 gross horsepower before the industry shifted to more conservative net ratings.
