About the Daihatsu Terios J100
The first-generation Daihatsu Terios (J100) was a pioneer in the mini-SUV segment, designed to meet Japanese kei car width restrictions while offering a five-door body for export markets. Despite its diminutive size, it featured a permanent four-wheel-drive system with a centre differential lock, giving it surprising off-road competence compared to modern soft-roaders. The 2000 model year marked a significant update, replacing the older SOHC engine with a more efficient 1.3-litre DOHC unit. While its narrow track and high centre of gravity make for busy on-road handling, its mechanical simplicity and ruggedness have earned it a cult following among budget adventurers.
